Submissions are now closed for Issue 8, Spring 2023: Comics

Our eighth issue will be devoted exclusively to comics pushing at the boundaries of what it means to be trans and (un)natural, alive and uncategorizable, embodied and unsteady. We continue to champion work that challenges genre and preconceived notions of what 'nature writing' is. There is exciting work experimenting both within and outside of the panel, and we want to see it all. In addition to traditional comics, this might include any of the following:

words with pictures
stories without words

comic criticism
memoir comix

reconsiderations of scientific illustration
&& more

Formats accepted: JPG, PNG, PDF.

Color & black and white accepted.

15 pages maximum per person.

This is a digital-only publication. We're most interested in seeing compelling work. If accepted, we work with contributors to make sure their work is represented on our website to the best specifications possible.

Submit via email to smokeandmoldjournal@gmail.com.

Include a short bio in your cover letter. Prior publications are not a requirement, and we are proud of being the first publication for many of our contributors. We do accept simultaneous submissions, just please let us know if the piece is first accepted elsewhere.

If you’re unfamiliar with our mission, you can learn more about us here before submitting, or look through our previous 7 issues

Our issues are small, featuring 4-8 authors/artists at a time, so that we can give individualized editorial attention to each piece, and so that readers are encouraged to engage with a whole issue. All submissions will be read and receive a timely response, usually within 4-6 weeks. If you have not heard back after 6 weeks, please feel free to write an inquire.

All contributors are paid $100USD upon publication.
